USCS on ICCAS 2011

On International Conference on Computer Applications in Shipbuilding (ICCAS 2011) annual conference held from 20th to 23rd september in Trieste, Italy, Gordan Šikić from USCS-a presented an article entitled "DEVELOPMENT OF INTERACTIVE TOOL FOR PAINT QUANTITY ESTIMATION OF SHIP STRUCTURES" (authors: G. Šikić, M. Bistričić & D. Perković), about TRIDENT Painting module for the calculation of painting areas and estimation of necessary paint quantities.

Besides the representatives from USCS, which this year attended the conference as active participants for the first time, there was more than a hundred participants from world leading maritime and shipbuilding organisations and companies.

Here is a short summary from the article:

"The correct estimation of painting area is very important since it is a basis for material specification, resources planning and allocation and price estimation. Therefore, a new application has been designed, that allows quick and reliable estimation of painting areas, as well as paint quantity. One of the application's main goals is to allow easy definition of complex spaces comprised of hull structure and corresponding equipment, leading to fast and reliable paint area calculation. The application uses data obtained from various CAD systems, exported with appropriate XML schema."

The article gives the application design overview, together with the paint area estimation workflow. The experiences gained during the application development and implementation are also presented.

Oracle UCM - Uljanik Technical documentation

A customised Oracle Universal Content Management (UCM) system for technical documentation management has been open for end users in Uljanik Shipyard.

The system permits the management of various non-structured content and information used by the shipbuilding staff in various forms, and which are not always convenient because of their non-availability, because of the cost of printing and delivery. As well, they can be non-accurate, and can lead to many not-necessary personal archives in various offices.

The Naval Architect article about the IMPROVE project

USCS is participating in EU sponsored project IMPROVE. IMPROVE is a three-year research project which started on the 1st October 2006. The project is supported by the European Commission under the Growth Programme of the 6th Framework Programme.

USCS - IMPROVE partner

The main objective of the IMPROVE project is to develop three new ship generations in an integrated multiple criteria decision making environment by using the advanced design synthesis and analysis techniques at the earliest stage of the design process, which innovatively considers structure, production, operational aspects, performance, and safety criteria on a concurrent basis. The product types focused on this project are new generations of LNG gas carriers and chemical tankers, and an innovative concept of a large Ro-Pax vessel. Download IMPROVE Press Release here.

40 years of IT technology in Uljanik

U povodu obljetnice 40 godina informatičke djelatnosti u Uljaniku, danas je na Poslovnom savjetu organiziran prijem predstavnika informatičara, onih koji su sudjelovali u počecima te djelatnosti i onih koji su je razvijali i doveli do današnje zavidne razine.

U prigodnici događaja Enco Vitasović, direktor USCS-a, uručio je poklone "za sjećanje" Mariju Buršiću, Rafaelu Varešku, Bojanu Vuku te Dor?u Sinkoviću koji više ne rade u Uljaniku, no koji su idejama i znanjem pridonijeli današnjim postignućima.

Čestitke u povodu obljetnice uputio je predsjednik Uprave Karlo Radolović. Istakao je da ga je posebno dojmilo što su zavidnu razinu informatieke djelatnosti u Uljaniku stvorili naši ljudi, naš kadar. On je siguran - rekao je dalje - da ae se taj kadar umješno nositi i s daljnjim izazovima, tj. prilagoditi se novim potrebama koje ae proizlaziti iz sve širih privatizacijskih procesa. Predsjednik Nadzornog odbora društva Uljanik IRI Emil Kožljan istaknuo je vezu menadžment-informatičari u kojoj prvi ističu što žele a drugi razrađuju kako doći do cilja.

Na kraju prigodnog druženja uprava društava Grupe Uljanik i informatičara, Veljko Grbac, direktor IRI-ja, iskazao je zahvalnost menadžmentu na poticaju i razumijevanju informatieke djelatnosti. Bez njihove podrške - kako je rekao - ne bi bilo ni današnjih informatiekih dostignuaa u Uljaniku.

Uljanik Shipyard goes live with MARS

On 14th October 2002 Uljanik Shipyard started to use MARS in their production environment. The MARS system (by Logimatic) is a ready-made Material and Production Control System based entirely on the most recent Oracle technology, dedicated to project-oriented industry such as shipbuilding industry. It is currently being utilized by more than 40 shipyards world-wide, including some of the world's largest.

Based on standard MARS 5.2 API's, USCS staff developed comprehensive interfaces between the CADDS 5i - TRIDENT system and the MARS system.
